7 Steps to Have a More Energy Saving House
There is not one of us that wouldn’t like to have a little more money in our bank account these days. One of the things that eats a lot of our money is our energy bill and it’s getting worse every year. But many people are asking how on earth can we possibly save money on our home energy costs?
Well let me assure you that it is possible for you to have an energy saving house by increasing its efficiency with a few simple easy to do steps.
Many people have no idea how much energy they are wasting. This can be remedied by doing simple things around the house that any home owner can do.
1. Your hot water is a good place to start. The temperature on it shouldn’t be set any higher than 60 degrees Celsius or 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If you set your water temperature any higher you will only have to mix cold water with the hot to cool it down so you can use it.
2. Your electricity is another place you need to ensure your home is using its energy efficiently. We’ve all heard our parents’ complain about us leaving the lights on when we’re not in a room but are we aware of this now in our own homes? Turning the lights off is an easy way to save some electricity.
3. But did you know that by leaving on your home electronics for instance televisions, stereos and DVD players you are still using electricity even when they’re on standby? Believe it or not these devices can use an average of five to ten percent of your household energy when left on standby. It’s simple; if you are not using something, make sure you turn it off.
4. Another thing to be aware of is some appliances use energy just by being plugged in even though they aren’t in use, like the microwave. Maybe you use it for a clock but if you’re not using it for a period of time consider unplugging it from the wall. A better solution might be to get a battery powered clock and put it in an easily visible spot.
5. Leaving your computer on is another energy waster. Did you know that the screen saver sometimes uses more energy than when you actually use it? Leaving the monitor on screen saver will also reduce its life. Consider enabling the display blanking feature to turn the monitor off automatically when your computer goes to idle. If I told you, you could save 50 to 100 dollars a year with this small change, I bet you’d be surprised but it’s true.
6. Reducing the brightness of your computer screen will also save you energy. This can also increase the battery life of your laptop. Getting a new LCD monitor to replace your old monitor is a great move as this can reduce the energy your computer uses by up to sixty percent.
7. When it comes to washing consider buying a front loading washing machine. These machines use a lot less water and energy in comparison to the top-loading washers. Also consider hanging your clothes outside to dry on a line rather than using your dryer. You will be saving energy and it’s better for your clothes.
Making these seven simple steps will get your home on the road to success and get your energy usage under control. You should see a good difference in your bills and make the world a better place at the same time.
