Due to the fact our energy bills only keep getting larger and larger every year more and more consumers are purchasing solar systems intended for their home. Maybe you are actually considering setting up a solar system for your household. Once you begin checking out the pros and cons of solar energy you will find it truly has many.

Therefore before buying a solar system for one’s own home you really need to look at all of them. So now here are a few of the Pros if you use solar energy.

- Initially, there’s no fear of people not having enough sun light. Solar power receives its power straight through the sun’s rays as a result it’s a renewable and sustainable source of energy. However this isn’t the case with standard fuels, which are becoming more and more scarce.
- Something else regarding solar power is it generates absolutely no pollution therefore it really is clean and sustainable and also eco-friendly.
- An additional pro is it spares you purchasing electricity and such expense on your electric bills.
- All of the solar panel systems that collect the electrical power for your house really are practically upkeep free and can easily last for years.
- Additionally it is extremely helpful in rural places where it cost hundreds and thousands for getting hooked up to the power grid.
- And finally, you’ll lessen your reliance on things such as fossil energy resource and won’t have to be worrying regarding the continuous rise of charges!

Conversely a few of the Cons are:

- The price for getting set-up can be extremely substantial dependent on the way in which you approach it, although at present you will find several rebates and credits through government that will help defray all those expenses.
- Our capability to capture energy from the sun still is minimal as compared to that which we can easily obtain from utilizing fossil fuel or petroleum.
- One more thing would be it doesn’t work at night time, or even during rains as a result of insufficient sunlight, although photo cells nowadays can operate with minimal light.

Nevertheless currently in places which get plenty of rainfall throughout the entire year, solar energy isn’t cost-effective by any means.

The situation seems every time solar power pops up, folks desire to talk about the pros and also the cons. Nonetheless, other folks believe that whatever the actual pros and cons are, the reality is we will need to discover methods of developing alternative energy whether or not everyone wants it or not. This is simply because our current resources really are becoming used up at an unsustainable pace. As a result people need us to think we must utilize the sun’s power no matter whether it’s good or not. It’s this sort of reasoning which has gotten us into difficulty from the get go.

With that being said I personally think the benefits significantly outweigh the negatives without having any down side on the environment or sustainability. It will surely cost individuals to have domestic systems put in place and operating however the expense of your electricity after that is incredibly small.

Think about a potential future with unlimited electric power with hardly any expense. If we let it rest with the authorities you will see a price and the majority of times substantially greater than we wish to pay. If we put in place our personal household solar power systems we might even put the govt. out of the energy market.

Think potential future electricity: consider solar.

For a while I was wondering how to save energy in my home. As I got studying things I discovered that there really are a huge number of ways you can save home energy.

Most of them are all about changing your habits. That means that they don’t cost us money but that doesn’t necessarily make them easy. Changing habits actually can be quite a challenge. So as you look at this list and try to decide what you want to do, you might want to learn first how much energy you actually use and then set a goal. That is if you actually want to have a measurable effect on your conservation efforts.

So here is a rapid fire list of as many ideas as I could get on this page of ways to save energy around your house.

- By being smarter about how you set your homes temperature. You can do this by lowering your thermostat to below 70 degrees in the winter, and above 72 in summer.
- By installing a programmable thermostat. They set the temperature where you need it depending on the time of day and your typical usage times. This is important for your comfort, convenience and economy of usage.
- By taking advantage of the natural heat from the sun. During colder months, open your drapes in the morning. This will let the sun’s light and warmth in for additional heat for your house and close them during the evening and night to help insulate your windows against the colder outside temperatures.
- By opening your windows in the summer during the evening to let cooler temperatures help cool your home and save on air conditioning. Then close your windows and drapes during the day when outside temperatures are high preventing the suns heat from coming in.
- By replacing all your light bulbs with the new high efficiency light bulbs.
- By turning off lights when there is no one is in a room.
- By finding ways to cut back on your lighting usage. You can do this by using daylight as much as possible and keeping your lights off during the day.
- By using lights specifically to light your task at hand instead of lighting the entire room.
- By leaving some light bulbs out of your lighting fixtures.
- By keeping your light bulbs clean dusting them allows them to provide full light.
- By replacing your appliances when you need to with Energy Star models.
- By adjusting the water level to match the load when washing your clothes, and by using cold water as much as possible.
- By hanging your clothes outside to dry when the weather permits rather than using your clothes dryer.
- By unplugging your electronic (computer, television, radio or coffeepot etc.) if you aren’t using them. Because did you know even if electronics are not turned on they use some energy just by being plugged in.
- By plugging your electronics into power bar and switching them off when not in use!
- By installing water efficient fixtures for example shower heads, low flow toilets and faucet aerators.
- By checking your windows and making sure they are in good shape. There are a lot of drafts from loose fitting single paned windows.

We can all do our part at saving energy and being friendlier to the earth by following these simple steps. Individually we can do our part and become a part of a powerful movement for change by being more aware, actually doing what we can and at the same time save ourselves money.

It has been clear for a long time that how North Americans consume energy is not sustainable. We are addicted to fossil fuels and foreign oil and this not only hurts our economy but puts our environment at risk.

The demand for home energy in America is experiencing very rapid growth, which, in turn, puts pressure on energy suppliers to deliver more and more. The problem is that not many people realize they can meet rising energy demands in their homes by conserving the energy they already have and by using it wisely.

Statistics say that home energy in America is responsible for almost 80% of our overall energy consumption. The sad thing is that 20% of that 80% is wasted because it is not being used wisely. If we could save that 20% and use it in an efficient way it would be far easier to meet our ever increasing energy demands at home. Not only that but we would have more money in our pockets.

All of us have a role to play in our future and one that will be good for all of us.

We in America need to invest in the development of renewable energy sources that will lead to new sources for the future. We need to invest in making our homes energy efficient, which will reduce our overall energy consumption. We need to be more diligent in how we use the energy in our homes (change our wasteful habits).

None of us, no matter where we live in this world, is escaping the impact of climate change. It is a global problem. But we in America can lead the way to a better future by reducing the pollution by our demand for energy that is causing global warming.

There are just three of many reasons why it’s vital for us to start doing our part to save home energy in America.

1) Inefficient use and neglect about how we use our energy will mean that global warming will continue at an even faster pace due to greenhouse gas emissions making our planet an almost impossible environment for our children to grow up.

2) Inefficient use of energy and wastefulness will mean our home energy bills will run out of control.

3) Going green will help our local economies as well as it will create new jobs, be kinder to our local environments and our carbon footprint, thus making our local environment better.

Our governments are helping us with incentives and tax breaks but we need to do our part. I know we can’t do it all at once but we can stop wasting energy by just changing our habits. We can also do things around the house to cause it to be more efficient. We can start investing even in small ways by buying more efficient appliances as we need them as well as more efficient furnaces and air conditioners. There really is a lot we can do that will cost us very little and if we all did them it would have a huge impact.

Besides all that wouldn’t you like to say with this person “We have fewer drafts around the windows, we never run out of hot water and the upstairs bedrooms are now more comfortable? We’ve actually achieved a 35% energy reduction overall.”

Do you want to get a handle on your home’s energy use? There is one tool that can help and that is the Home Energy Yardstick. The Home Energy Yardstick tool compares your home’s energy usage to similar homes in your area of the country to see how your home compares.

Knowing that your home uses about the same amount as homes of a similar size in your area does not mean that it can’t be improved. But it does help you understand that you are in a similar boat as others.

On the other hand if you find your home to be using more energy than others it raises some questions that definitely need to be answered.

Being able to get a handle on how your home’s energy usage compares to others is definitely an important step in being able to improving its efficiency. Then you will be able to make better decisions on what home improvements you need to make to improve its energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and increase your comfort.

There are some things you will need to know before you use the yardstick.

-You will need your last 12 months of utility bills
-All the energy sources you use for your home: i.e. natural gas, electricity, fuel oil, etc.
-The square footage of your home.
-Your zip code.
-The number of people living in your home.
-The total square footage of your home including the basement.
-The annual total kWh of electricity used.
So gather this information ahead of time.

After you have used the home energy yardstick and compared your energy usage with other homeowners who have used the tool you will have a better idea of how your energy usage measures up. Finding out this information will make it easier to figure out how wise you have been in using the energy around your home. You might find out that the moves you have made are paying off or on the other hand you may come face to face with how wasteful you’ve been.

You can also take advantage of the Home Energy Advisor to get recommendations for how you might make improvements to your home that are typical for homes in your area.

Now I’m sure since you’re reading this article that you understand why it is important to make your home as energy efficient as you can. The main reason why most people want to make their home as efficient as they can is because of the ever increasing cost of energy. And most of us have come to realize that the costs are going to continue to sky rocket at an even higher pace if we don’t do something about it.

You are some of the wisest people because you are seriously looking for solutions on how to make your energy usage more efficient. One of the major ways of making your energy usage more efficient it to get rid of the unnecessary and wasteful practices you have around your house. Not using energy efficient light bulbs, not turning light off when not being used, not dressing appropriately for the time of year and making your furnace do extra work etc.

Using the home energy yardstick may be just what you need to open your eyes and start making changes to your house and your habits today.

It seems like we never cease to be surprised every time we receive our electricity bill. We know the importance of trying to save and we have in fact been trying to do so but our electricity bill continues to go up. What might be the problem? That is where a home energy check up can really have its benefits.

Having or doing a home energy check up is highly recommended. It is a process that takes you step by step through the present condition of your home as far as its energy efficiency. It can be gone over either by you or by a professional trained to perform this audit.

It will allow you, the homeowner, to determine the areas of your home that could be improved and therefore have a greater energy efficiency. It will also give you practical solutions to these areas of inefficiency that you can implement. This will help you save money on your energy bills.

It is not only meant to save you money but to also help you have the comfortable home you desire and need. In a home energy check up, your home will be checked not only for its condition but how you use it as both of these are very important.

Some of the areas that will be checked to determine your homes efficiency level are:

The amount and condition of the insulation your home has. This will include the attic, walls and foundation walls it should include things like the vapor barrier. Today the attic should have R40 the walls R20 and the foundation walls including rim joist etc. R20. The recommendation would be to upgrade where your house is deficient and where possible.

The tightness of the air inside your house is another factor. This will include things like any cracks and holes allowing air to penetrate your house. This will also include the condition of your windows and doors as well as their installation.

Your heating and cooling systems are another major area. Their age and efficiency are factors. How you set the thermostat and use them is also very important.

The kinds, number and how you use your lights can have a big impact. For instance are you using energy efficient light bulbs? Do you only use the lights you need? Are you turning off lights in rooms you’re not in? Do you have your house lit like an airport runway?

Your house should be checked for any water leaks especially hot water taps as this can be a huge energy and resource waster.

The age and efficiency of your appliances are also important. Older appliances are huge energy wasters and you should seriously consider energy star appliances as soon as possible. You also need to unplug appliances you are not using. Like that beer fridge in the basement with just one case in it.

There are many more areas that you will want to go over thoroughly.

You may be wondering what is Energy Saving Hour. Well in short its part of an initiative to increase the world’s awareness about global climate change, and our need to save energy as part of the solution. It is a part of Earth Hour which is an event every year in which cities around the world participate by turning off their lights and decreasing or stopping to use electricity for about 60 minutes. This year 2011, Energy saving hour will take place around the world on March 26th.

It’s symbolic for sure, but many cities again have agreed to be part of “Earth Hour”. Participating governments, organizations, businesses, and individuals around the world will turn off their lights for an hour. To stop using electricity for an hour may not seem like much and in fact in the total scheme of things won’t do much unless more of us hear the message and start doing something about it in our personal lives.

The real point is to make a statement to everyone that we are being very wasteful with our resources and this is causing major problems for everyone around the world. You don’t have to worry though because it won’t include any electrical use that’s deemed essential for services.

One of the biggest causes of global warming is our waste of energy and our use of resources such as fossil fuels to produce that energy. These fossil fuels exist in limited quantities deep within the earth. We have used them as if we had an unlimited supply but, they will soon deplete if we keep using them as we are.

There are studies which tell us up to 30% of the average person’s annual income goes to paying utility bills. Not only that but 5% of that, is wasted because of the inefficient use of our electrical appliances and electronic equipment around the house.

So what can you do?
Well first of all you need to be aware of where you are not efficiently using electricity around your house. Then you need to change your habits and become someone who wants to be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. This will not only be good for the planet but good for you as well. Especially if you can take that 5% or more wasted energy cost and put it back in your pocket.

One important thing you should keep in mind is that saving energy doesn’t only mean saving electricity. It includes our heating costs, our water heating costs, our cost of water, and our transportation costs.

One thing you could do is look at energy saving hour as something you should do every day not just during “Earth Hour”. What do I mean? I’m not talking about turning things off for an hour every day but finding ways of conserving energy around your house every day.

-	You can do this by turning things off when you’re not using them.
-	Turning things like your water heater or your thermostat down a little.
-	Using less water by taking shorter showers or filling your bathtub less.
-	Using more efficient appliances, light bulbs and automobiles.

The above list is only the surface and there is much you can do to help save energy and be kinder to our planet.

You will not only lower your electric bills, you will also provide future generations around the world a better and brighter future. Us all doing our part is the key to success. If we can all do our part at conserving energy every day the problem of a shortage of energy, its rising cost and its global impact can be solved.

During the warmer months of the year we love to spend time outside in our yards gardening, trimming and keeping it looking great. We want the exterior of our homes to look really good don’t we? But do we put as much effort into making sure the exterior of our home is energy efficient? We keep a good roof over our heads so why don’t we make sure we have energy saving exteriors to our homes and stop throwing away money by allowing heat to escape through the walls.

Did you know that the bulk of any home’s heat loss escapes through drafts? By plugging these drafts you will save a lot on your heating bill throughout the years. Start by walking around the exterior of your home and looking for things that need to be improved.

- First have a close look at all the places where two different building materials meet. Like where the siding (brick or siding) meets the foundation or where the siding meets the chimney. Also inspect all the corners around the house’s perimeter. Fill any cracks or holes in your foundation with mortar and in the siding with caulking or a foam rope and caulking or any other appropriate material. I am sure you have heard it said that a job worth doing is a job worth doing right. Not only that, but a job done right with the right material will last much longer.

- You will also need to look closely at where anything penetrates the exterior of the home. That might be for an exterior water tap, something electrical or central air pipe etc. Make sure they are sealed tightly around them as well. Again use spray foam or caulking where needed.

- During your inspection don’t forget to look at your windows and doors. There are two aspects here, one is the condition of the windows and doors and the other has to do with how tightly they are sealed around them. If your windows and doors are old wood ones it is best to replace them as soon as possible. If they are newer then all you need is to check the calking around them. In either case you need to make sure they are properly caulked and seal tightly.

- Some people without central air have air conditioners sometimes called sleeve air conditioners mounted through a wall rather than set into a window for the summer months. While this is convenient and saves time setting it up and taking it out of the window every year, it is also has a down side. During the winter months it can be a cause of letting in drafts. So if you have a wall or sleeve air conditioner you need to make sure that it is properly insulated and sealed around. This is most easily done by investing in a proper cover that you can place over the unit during the winter. It will stop heat from escaping and unwanted cold air from getting into your home.

- The final thing can’t be seen from the exterior of your home but nevertheless has to do with your home’s exterior and that is to make sure that it is properly insulated. Having your home properly insulated will save you a lot of money. This is true about your basement, your walls, and specifically your attic. Many older homes have little to no insulation in them so doing some work here can save you big. Today basement and walls should have an R value of R20 and attics an R36. Upgrading the attic insulation is relatively easy with the walls being more difficult but none the less possible. Here you also need to make sure that any gaps around pipes, ductwork or chimney are properly insulated and sealed.

One thing I highly recommend is if you can possibly afford it, replace your old doors and windows with new energy efficient ones. While no doubt this will cost you some money, it will make your home more comfortable and save you money on your heating.

Today with the price of home heating doing nothing but going up, making sure the exterior of your home is properly sealed isn’t something you should ignore, it’s a necessity.

One of the places we use the most energy in our home is how we heat our home. This is sometimes called our home thermal energy. For most home owners our heating bill is a huge expense. But, I want to tell you that there are some improvements that most homeowners can do that will have them saving significantly on their heating bill. And many of these improvements can be done without having to spend a lot of money.

I know you’ve heard that before “Oh, it won’t cost you much” but then you hear about people spending thousands on their home to save on their heating bill. Often words like “home improvements” can send people into a panic. While there are some home improvements that do cost a lot of money, there are also things you can do that will improve how your home’s energy use and at the same time not destroy your budget.

One of the major reasons why many homes are not energy efficient is through the heat escaping out through the walls and ceiling. This is due to drafts which not only let cold air during the winter into your home but also let the heat escape. This obviously makes your home harder to heat and costs you a lot of money. It is estimated that around twenty percent of the average home’s heat escapes as a result of drafts.

As a result if you can find where those drafts are coming from and fix the draft you can save home energy. To find these drafts use a candle and then blow it out and let it smoke. Now move the smoking candle around the perimeter of your doors and windows. The drafts will become obvious as you see the smoke change from going up to going straight sideways.

When you have discovered a draft all you need to do is seal it. The way you seal it will depend on where the draft is and what is causing it. You can use different types of weather stripping around your doors and windows. You can also fill any cracks around window and door frames with caulking. You should also check along the floors under baseboards and seal where needed with a caulking.

Another simple no cost solution is turning your thermostat down and you can save on your heating bill. You may not believe it but by just turning your thermostat down one degree, you can reduce your energy consumption by up to 5 percent. Besides that with only a one degree difference most people don’t even notice the difference. Many people don’t use every room in their house or at least not every day. By closing off the registers to the rooms you aren’t using you can also save money.

Another simple energy saving idea is to open your curtains and so the sun can heat your room during the day and close them at sun down to trap the warm air in the room.

Of course the best way to save energy is by making sure your home is correctly insulated. This one is going to cost you some money but in most cases it is not that expensive and overwhelmingly cost effective. As much as one third of your heat escapes through your roof. Check your roof out a couple days after the next snow. Does the snow on your roof melt faster than the snow on the roof next door? This means you need to upgrade your insulation. There are many different types of insulation available and they all are effective but are used for different purposes. Making sure you walls are also properly insulated will save you another third of your heat.

These simple solutions cost you nothing to very little yet will definitely improve your ability to heat your home in a cost effective way and will save you a lot of money over time.

Today with all the environmental changes going on, the lighting industry is one industry that has changed to meet the demands of consumers by manufacturing energy efficient, energy saving candle bulbs. These new light bulbs are saving consumers money on their electric bills and they’re changing the way we see things.

Energy efficient light bulbs can save the homeowner a lot on their electrical bill over using a standard incandescent light bulb. They use around a quarter of the electricity a standard light bulb uses. Not only that but these energy saving light bulbs produces the same amount of light as standard bulbs.

But the benefits of using these new energy saving light bulbs don’t stop there.

- These bulbs last ten times longer than incandescent bulbs, which is another saving over time.

- They emit a cool temperature due to the lower wattage of electricity.

- This lower heat output makes them perfect for enclosed settings or spaces and ideal for using near a delicate lampshade.

- They also give you a white light instead of the yellowish light a standard light bulb gives off making them seem brighter.

There are a lot of different types of energy efficient light bulbs. At the same time there are certainly several benefits to utilizing these energy efficient candle bulbs in your home. Like the other energy efficient light bulbs, these candle bulbs have the same benefits plus some extras.

- Candle light brings a sense of formal and romantic to a room and creates a wonderful atmosphere. At the same time these new candle light bulbs can also have a flickering kind of light similar to real candles.

- Using real candles is often dangerous in certain situations because of a fear of them being touched or knocked over by children or pets. While these new bulbs are cool to touch which takes away the risk that real candles have.

- Burning real candles emits fumes and though it is only a small amounts it is none the less a form of air pollution.

- The price of candle bulbs, though initially more, really is cheaper when you take into account how long they last in comparison. Candles will only burn for a few hours while energy saving candle bulbs last for thousands of hours.

We have already replaced candles with candle light bulbs in many instances like in chandeliers and on Christmas trees. Now today many people are replacing these bulbs and more with energy saving candle light bulbs. People are also using them in wall sconces and other types of fixtures and lamps to give a room a new kind of romantic feeling.

It really is easy to switch to these new candle light bulbs. When you make that switch you are one step closer to making your home energy efficient. You are also making a choice to stop and change the environmentally harmful ways of the past and make a change for the future. It’s important that we all do our part to reduce our foot print on the planet by reducing pollution and waste and start it back on a road to recovery.

Many home owners are starting to use solar energy for their homes because it reduces their monthly bills and is more environmentally friendly. A solar energy system is a great way to get off or reduce your dependency on the electricity grid and save money. It was once an idea for the future but the cost of solar energy systems are now within most everyone’s reach and they are being sold almost everywhere.

The way they work is each solar cell absorbs the sun’s energy then through a process converts that light energy into electricity. There are several solar cells in each solar panel and then these panels can be linked together to make a solar system. Sometimes these systems are also called photovoltaic or PV systems.

Many people use a simple form of these solar or PV systems everyday in some calculators, certain wrist watches or in solar outdoor lighting. Bigger more complex systems are used to power your home. They can also be used to power water pumps, communications equipment and many other things around the house.

PV cells are made of very small semi-conductors normally made of silicone. These small semiconductors absorb energy when the suns’ light strikes them and then this energy is converted into electricity. These solar cells are linked together into panels which are what you see on the roofs of people’s homes.

How much your solar system will cost depends on what you are trying to achieve with it what your electrical needs are and the size of your home. The costs of solar systems today have dropped dramatically (about 80 percent) over the past 20 years and they are continuing to come down. But these systems can still cost around $20,000 and up for an average sized home. One great thing is that many state, provincial and local governments have incentives and tax credits that can reduce your start up investment considerably.

You will also have the advantage that over time your solar energy system will reduce your electric utility bills dramatically or you may never have to pay one at all. Another advantage that many home owners are taking advantage of is called “net metering”. This is where the home owner has the ability to sell back to the local utility the excess electricity their solar panels are producing that they are not using. This means that your home can work for you.

Solar power is also being used by home owners to power their homes so that they don’t have to tap into the electric grid at all. This is great for remote rural situations. Did you know it can cost $20,000 to $80,000 per mile to extend power lines from the existing electric grid? In these situations it is obvious a solar energy system would even be an unbelievable savings just on the initial setup let alone the savings over the years. This is why in remote situations solar energy systems are increasingly being installed rather than extending power lines.

Homeowners who are thinking of taking advantage of a solar powered system should start preparing now by reducing how much electricity their home uses before they get a system. Yes the initial investment is big but homeowners are discovering that the benefits over time are far greater than the initial cost.

This investment is not only good for you but as more and more people change to this source of energy, global warming will be reduced. And that means it’s better for our planet as well and for future generations.
